Freed From the Love of Money: Learning to Trust God’s Providence

How to not let money rule your heart as a Catholic content creator and business owner

This week, we’ve been doing the hard work of getting real about our motivations to create content and build an online business as Catholic creatives.

Here are five passages from Sacred Scripture that speak clearly about greed, the love of money, and God's call to trust in His perfect providence.

As a Catholic spiritual director, I encourage you to pray slowly with each passage (using Lectio Divina), asking the Holy Spirit to reveal how and why your heart is attached to possessions and financial security, rather than to Christ.

1. Matthew 6:24
“No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon."

Reflection:
Jesus does not say that money is evil. Rather, he distinguishes that money becomes dangerous when it becomes our master. Every Christian must honestly ask: Who is making my decisions - God or my desire for financial gain, success, or comfort? True freedom comes when Jesus reigns over every part of our lives, including our finances.

Action:
Today, identify one financial decision you have been making out of fear rather than trust. Offer it to God in prayer and ask Him to guide your priorities and bring peace to your fears.

2. 1 Timothy 6:9–10
Those who want to be rich are falling into temptation and into a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge them into ruin and destruction.

For the love of money is the root of all evils, and some people in their desire for it have strayed from the faith and have pierced themselves with many pains.

Reflection:
St. Paul does not condemn wealth itself, but the desire that places riches above God. Greed slowly convinces us that happiness is always one more promotion, investment, or purchase away. Christ calls us to seek holiness first, trusting that He will provide what we truly need.

Take Action:
Examine your spending and your thoughts on money this week. Ask yourself: Am I pursuing holiness with the same intensity that I pursue financial gain?

3. Luke 12:15
“Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”

Reflection:
Our identity is never measured by what we own. The world teaches us to accumulate, but Jesus teaches us to become rich in love, mercy, and faith. A full bank account cannot replace a heart that is empty of God.

Take Action:
Choose one possession you no longer need and give it away to someone who would benefit from it as an act of generosity.

4. Hebrews 13:5
Let your life be free from love of money but be content with what you have, for He has said, "I will never forsake you or abandon you."

Reflection:
Contentment grows from confidence in God's faithful presence. Greed often arises from the fear that God will not provide enough, within the timing that we want. Every act of gratitude weakens the grip of materialism and strengthens our trust in our Father's care.

Take Action:
Write down five blessings God has already given you that money could never buy, and thank Him for each one.

5. Proverbs 11:28
Whoever trusts in riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.

Reflection:
Riches can disappear overnight, but a life rooted in righteousness bears fruit forever. God invites us to invest in what has eternal value: prayer, charity, justice, and love. These treasures can never be lost.

Take Action:
Perform one hidden act of generosity today without expecting recognition or repayment. Let it be an offering of love to Christ.
